U16 Div 1 Semi Final v Walterstown 26.10.2024

Navan O’Mahonys 2-12
Walterstown 4-4

These 2 teams have been consistently meeting in finals and semi finals over the years. The games are always entertaining and close and this one was no different.

Walterstown started the better taking an early lead with 2 points. Lauren Skelly got O’Mahonys opening point. O’Mahonys had a couple of wides, and a close goal effort from Sadhbh Byrne. But the team were starting to settle with Amy Betson, Ruby McDonald, Sophie Brady, and Caoimhe Mulchrone all working hard retaining possession of the ball.
O’Mahonys got the first goal arriving from Lauren Skelly. Walterstown responded with a point. O’Mahonys reeled off 3 points from play from Genevieve Dorrigan, Emma Sheridan, and Lauren Skelly. And looked like we might go into half time with a 5 point lead with Skelly also adding 2 points from frees. But Walterstown replied on the stroke of half time with a goal. To leave it 2 points between the teams at the break.

Half time
Navan O’Mahonys 1-5
Walterstown 1-3

The 2nd half started fast with the O’Mahonys half back line of Aisling McElwaine, Holly McKeigue, and Eva Rowe covering lots of ground and pressuring the opposition. 2 points arrived from frees thanks to Lauren Skelly. And for the next 6 minutes O’Mahonys hit a purple patch. Emma Sheridan scored a point. Genevieve Dorrigan scored a point and then got a goal from distance. Walterstown responded and added a point and a goal as they put on the pressure to get back into the game. But the O’Mahonys back line of Hannah Byrne, Grace Hogan, Caoilinn Smith and goalkeeper Sophie Birmingham weathered the storm. Some fresh legs from the bench with Charley Coogan and 3 points from frees from Lauren Skelly relieved some of the pressure. With a 5 point lead going into injury time Walterstown responded again getting a goal! But it was to be the last action of the game as the referee blew the full time whistle.

It was an entertaining game with two good teams. It was a brilliant team effort from the O’Mahonys girls and they can look forward to a final against Dunboyne as their reward.
