Navan O’Mahony’s lost out to a strong Royal Gaels outfit in the opening round of the Senior Football Championship, with goals proving key to the Dunshaughlin side’s success.
The first score of the game came after three minutes, when Orlaith Mallon found the net for Navan O’Mahony’s to give them an early lead. Royal Gaels kicked three wides in the opening minutes, before finding the net to level the sides in the eighth minute.
Megan Collins put her side in the lead again in the thirteenth minute, but this was soon nullified by a Royal Gaels point at the opposite end of the pitch. Two goals in five minutes put some distance between the sides for the first time. The twentieth minute saw Mallon convert a free and two minutes later, Olivia Callan kicked an impressive point from play to reduce the gap to four.
An infringement in the square saw a penalty awarded to Royal Gaels, which was duly converted. Sarah Powderly was quick off the mark to respond with a point. Royal Gaels’ final score of the half came in the form of a goal in the twenty-seventh minute while Mallon pointed from play before the half time whistle.

Mallon kicked the first point of the second half, scoring a free after five minutes. The deficit increased to nine points by the twelfth minute, with two points from play for the home side.
A good point from Denise McGrath in the fourteenth minute was quickly followed by two Mallon scores to leave six points in it and give O’Mahony’s a fighting chance of clawing the game back.
Royal Gaels pushed on however, kicking the next four points and retaining control of the game. Mallon kicked the final two scores of the match and Royal Gaels held an eight point advantage when the final whistle was blown.
