Navan O’Mahony’s 3-12
Trim 0-11
Navan O’Mahony’s claimed the Div 3 CL title with a ten point win over Trim in a sunny Kiltale on Saturday afternoon, with the game closer than the scoreline might suggest for most of the match.
Both teams missed their opening opportunities, but it was Trim who took the lead with two points from play in the opening five minutes. Jorja Keogh responded in turn for O’Mahony’s before Lizzie Brennan brought the sides level with a free. Trim edged ahead again before Isabel O’Connor scored a long-range point.
A goal chance for Trim was denied by a great intervention from Mags Tompkins. Almost twenty minutes passed with only two scores, one from a Trim free and the other from play from O’Connor.
The dying minutes of the first half is when O’Mahony’s did much to lay the foundations for their victory when Brennan edged them ahead for the first time in the game with a free. Izzy Kinsella followed almost immediately to find the net and Lauren Woods saw out the half with a point, to leave five between the sides.
Navan O’Mahony’s 1-06
Trim 0-04
Keogh converted a free to extend O’Mahony’s lead to six early in the second half, but Trim were not going anywhere without a fight. In as many minutes, they added three points (two from play) to leave only a goal between the sides.
Kinsella gave O’Mahony’s some breathing space and the lead was restored when substitute Cara Ratty was quick to respond to a breaking ball and rebounded it to the net.
Ten minutes passed before another score came and this time it was for Trim. Another goal opportunity for Donal Hogan’s charges was prevented by a good save from the Trim netminder. Kinsella found herself on the ground in front of goal, laying it off to O’Connor who scored her side’s third goal and settling the result once and for all.
Claire Mallon, Keogh and Ratty all added scores in the closing stages, as did Trim and O’Mahony’s had enough to claim the title. In addition to the scorers, there was some great defensive play from the full back line of Megan Kinsella, Amana Feeney and Anna Gardiner. Tara Fay and Allanah Brady won a lot of ball in the half back line while Roisin Tobin led by example as captain.
Annie Hogan, Lilly Dywer and Aoibhín Kielty also won lots of possession and were crucial in setting up a number of attacks while Mia McNally, Milly Murray and Caoimhe McKenna also made a good impact on entering play.
Captain Roisin Tobin accepted the cup.
