Navan O’Mahony’s secured a place in the Div 1 FL final with a win over Oldcastle on a sunny Wednesday evening in Millbrook.

Lauren Woods raised the first white flag of the evening with a point, with the hosts responding in turn almost immediately. Megan Collins made a run from a tight angle, beating the Oldcastle netminder to find the net.

Points from Orlaith Mallon and Olivia Callan, via the upright, extended the lead before Oldcastle’s next score came in the tenth minute. Further points from Mallon, Denise McGrath and Callan left some distance between the sides.

Oldcastle reduced the gap to four with a well-taken goal with five minutes remaining in the half. O’Mahony’s recovered well from the score, with McGrath splitting the posts after a good play involving Collins. An injury time point from Mallon meant six points separated the sides at the ineterval.

Going into the second half with a lead, Colin O’Rourke’s charges knew they had to stay ahead to secure their place in the final. McGrath converted a free in the opening minutes, with Milly Clarke Carolan following this with a well-taken goal.

A point from Mallon put eleven between the sides. Oldcastle’s first point of the half came after ten minutes. O’Mahony’s managed to keep a comfortable lead in spite of a lot of good play from Oldcastle, with a second goal from Collins giving some breathing space.

After a Mallon point, Oldcastle enjoyed their best spell over the sixty minutes and O’Mahony’s needed to rely on the lead that they had built up to this point. In a seven minute spell, the hosts added 1-03. A McGrath point, set up by Collins, broke the momentum in the twenty-third minute. The sides exchanged points in the final few minutes, with O’Mahony’s ultimately running out ten point winners.
