SFC v Na Fianna 24.08.2024 Report

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-11
Na Fianna 1-05

Navan O’Mahony’s registered their first win of the senior championship with a hard-fought win over very strong and well organised Na Fianna side, on the Trim Road on Saturday evening.

All 6 forwards managed to get their name on the scoresheet, including 2nd half substitute, Isabel Thorpe, making her senior championship debut.

Na Fianna started the strongest and seemed to adapt quickly to the slippery conditions introduced by a downpour just before kick-off. After a couple of wides, Na Fianna registered their first point within the first 4 minutes. Next score again came for the Enfield side on the 11-minute mark.

Battling a strong defence, it wasn’t until the 17th minute that the Navan side got a point on the board through a well taken point from Megan Collins. Navan O’Mahonys enjoyed a patch of good position and a few attacks, all ending with missed opportunities. Denise McGrath drew the sides level in the 28th minute, and just on the stroke of half time Na Fianna regained their 1-point lead.

Half Time Score:
Navan O’Mahony’s 0-02
Na Fianna 0-03

It was a much better start to the 2nd half for O’Mahonys, with Olivia Callan winning the ball straight from the throw-in, and after some lovely forward play, Megan Collins found the back of the net with-in the first 30 seconds. The following 3 kickouts were won by the home side and Ailbhe Leahy, Robyn Murray and Neasa McDermott all found their first point of the game. By the 3rd minute of the half Navan had added 1-03 to the scoreline.

The following 5 minutes saw a change in momentum, with Na Fianna working 2 points in quick concession and goal for themselves. With plenty of hard work from Sarah Maguire, Sarah Powderly, Laoise McDermott and the rest of the O’Mahonys backs, this would turn out to be Na Fianna’s last score of the game.

The sides remained level for the next 10 minutes, until Olivia Callan found her 1st point, followed by Collins getting her 2nd.
In the 22nd minute of the 2nd half Isabel Thorpe replaced Neasa McDermott and almost immediately scored her 1st senior point. Collins got her 3rd point of the game from play to bring her total to 1-03.

Orlaith Mallon secured a point from a free kick and Rebecca Reilly closed out the game with the final point of the game for herself.
Navan O’Mahonys final group game will be in 2 weeks’ time against Oldcastle, where a win will guarantee a quarter final place.
